About us …
Feltrosofia began in 2001 in a small valley near Benfeita, a mountain village in the Serra do Açor (Mountains of the Goshawk) in the green heart of Portugal. Since 2004 we've had a workshop in Benfeita itself, one of Portugal's historic Aldeias do Xisto or schist villages. The name of the village means 'well done' or 'well made' and it comes from the village's long-standing reputation for the quality of its products. We're proud to be part of that historic tradition.
Here in Benfeita we found the perfect environment to create our “Art in pure wool” and in doing so discovered that the world of felt is infinite ... hats, scarves, purses and bags, clothes, fashion accessories and decorative objects ... a continual stream of new designs leave our workshop, made in wools of the highest quality and dyed with colours friendly to both human beings and the environment (Öko Tex standard 100). And the fascination doesn’t stop. It’s absolutely amazing what is possible using only clean and combed wool, warm water, soap, your hands and your own effort, and a good mix of creativity, patience and dedication.
The philosophy of felt starts here. It is an invitation into the world of wools and colours, and into the adventure of creating and exploring using different techniques ... wet felt (water and soap), nuno felt (mixture of wool with different textiles) and needle felt (using special felt needles). The possibilities for mixing wool with other fibres – linen, silk, or even other natural materials like moss, leaves, wood, etc – are endless.
Our Online Shop features a selection of our designs. Or perhaps you have your own ideas? Talk to us about them! We would be pleased to realise them for you. Or you could even create them yourself by participating in one of our workshops.
